It is January 3, 2021. I’m currently sitting in the salon of “Renegade Mermaid” as we sail in Galveston Bay. It is my first sail of the year actually and it feels a little bittersweet. Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic that has swept over the world, we are not currently doing any blue water traveling. This is the first year in the past five years that we have not headed south for the winter. So it is bitter in the fact that I would rather be sitting on the deck in my swimsuit enjoying the sun, but it is sweet in that we are working hard to plan future Sail Ventures! We are going to use 2021 to plan some amazing adventures that will take us through the entire year of 2022.
Maybe I am a little ahead of myself here. For this first post, you may be wondering who we are – let me tell you. I’m Laurie and my husband Darryl and I are currently owners of a sailboat charter company in Kemah, Texas- Windward SeaVenture. Every January, we take customers down to various locations in the Caribbean and do a week long sailing vacation that we appropriately named, sail ventures. Darryl and I have spent a lot of time down south and we are very familiar with many islands down there. The two of us have shared many adventures and made friends with some of the locals which has enhanced our trips that much more. We actually got married on our friend’s sailboat in Grenada. So needless to say, the Caribbean has a special place in our hearts.
About two years ago, we met Andy who became one of our charter captains. I don’t really know exactly how it all unfolded but it became obvious that we all had this vision of sharing our love of sailing, travel and the Caribbean with people. We had made some sort of timeline and as they say, “the best laid plans…” Our timeline became expedited and here we are planning 2022 to have the “Renegade Mermaid” in blue water where she belongs.
So right now, we are planning, updating the site as frequently as we can and getting ready to share some experiences of a lifetime. Please check the website often for updates and to see our itinerary for 2022.
Until then, happy sailing, fair winds, and following seas!
